They are fondly called as the FAB4. Four passionate cooks who often got together to make their regional specialties and give their children, no matter where they were, “home-made and authentic pickles and powders” to make their meals complete. “With a little help from JSN, their IT partner, and the growing online marketing space the team of “FAB 4”, decided to take their passion to the next level. They launched the platform “Pickle & Powder”, to treat the taste buds of people living in Chennai.” says Srikar. Ok now we have to know who are the people behind this “FAB4” team. Meet Leela Gupta, Sharda Jha, Thulasi Sarma, and Bhagavathi Srikantiah the Special Forces team behind the venture “Pickle & Powder”. They are supported by Srikar, Madhavi, Vishnu, Shalini, and Raghav in their efforts.
Why “Pickle & Powder”- “Family recipes that have been cooked for eons are very close to our hearts. These recipes acquire a certain character and reputation. They are cherished by generations. Tastes, preferences and choices change with time. Even with the increase in choices, these recipes have stood the test of time. They bring back memories, refresh long forgotten associations and evoke emotions within us” For someone who loves traditional food, I must say I agree one hundred per cent with this association.
“We decided to focus on foods that people would crave for often. We also wanted to provide respite to people who do not have the time to make these authentic dishes at home, but still long to have them on the table”.
They tested the concept initially among friends and family members. “With a very encouraging feedback, we ran concept tests through free sample campaigns. The response was overwhelming. This also helped us gauge the interest on product categories that we had in mind”
Based on all the information they obtained through these campaigns the team arrived at their menu. “As of now it’s a fixed selection of pickles and powders which we have categorized based on regional flavors of India. We concentrate on the typical all-time favorites. We are constantly on the hunt, picking hints and ideas from dining table conversations. Customer feedback and various requests have also been feeding into what we offer.”
Apart from gauging public interests and setting the menu accordingly, the team also faced issues with delivery logistics, which they resolved. They are now focusing on their marketing strategies to make more people aware of their product range. Though they have established their initial clientele solely based on word of mouth recommendations, they are working towards increasing this base.
Despite the minor hiccups they say the response so far has been “very exciting and encouraging. Many other home makers have approached us to sell their products as well. Eventually we will make it a market place for homemade pickles & powders.” So they have struck a chord with not only consumers but also other specialists who would like to share their expertise with as many people as possible!
The team strongly believes in spreading the word and being patient for a response. Their one piece of advice is to“put as much money as you can afford into marketing/PR/advertising right out of the gate.”
