A noble thought and a noble cause, but what makes it even more interesting is the fact that tasty food comes with this package. Meet team Health Zingo who are here to serve you healthy food using different channels like restaurants, corporate catering and on order deliveries.
“Health problems have become a major issue in our country in this fast and busy life. Due to increased pressure of work, competition, stress etc., today’s professionals, students, businessmen and housewives alike are facing serious health disorders. Heart diseases, diabetes, obesity, depression, reproductive health problems are the major concerns of India today. But all of the mentioned health problems can be controlled with a healthy lifestyle. Health Zingo believes that if we can inculcate a healthy diet in our daily lifestyle we can easily cut down the risk for such problems.” The team at Health Zingo aims to do just that by promoting something they firmly believe in, “prevention is better than cure.”
So how did they come up with this idea? “The idea of starting Health Zingo took shape based on several real life experiences we had as individuals, where we came across family members, friends and many others who had fallen prey to chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis etc. at relatively young age. Worse realization was that many of these folks had become dependent on medication for life.”
Some of the other things that they found were that, while awareness is an issue, actual implementation of things that can keep one healthy is a bigger issue. They also realized that more and more people were willing to make serious efforts towards adopting a natural healthy life-style.
This level of detail in their background research is evident when one steps into Health Zingo and looks at the menu. “Menu planning is at the heart of our operations given that we focus on health of our patrons. We ensure that the food is nutritionally well-balanced, easy to digest and is tasty. For that we focus on ingredients, quantity of serving and cooking methodology.”
Still not satisfied? Take a look at some of the key points that they try to achieve with their menu.
- “There is no deep fried item on our menu”.
- “Ingredients are selected keeping preference of complex carb over simple carb (usage of unpolished organic rice, multi grain bread, wheat momos instead of maida based momos), no trans-fat or saturated fat, vegetable juicing as against fruit juicing, higher protein content vs high fat content (tofu instead of paneer is an example).”
- “Meals are designed in such a way that they are easy to digest and not gaseous particularly dinner menu.”
- “We promote early dinner – when we started we wanted to close the restaurant at 9 pm, but keeping the practical aspects in mind (Bangalore traffic and life-style) we had to extend the hours, but we still close at 10 pm vs 11 pm in most of Bangalore restaurant.”

So what were the biggest challenges that this venture had to face in their journey so far? “Availability of manpower was one of the biggest challenges that we faced. Given our concept of healthy food, it required un-leaning on part of the chefs/kitchen staff which is more difficult than learning new stuff. Other issues were related to availability of real estate and very high rentals that makes business very difficult to be profitable.”
What makes this venture unique is that they are working towards a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle which, in their own words, includes “food, physical fitness and mental fitness. You can’t ignore one and think that others will make up for that.”
The team definitely has plans to move forward in this direction “We want to establish food business before expanding into integrated offerings around food, physical fitness and mental fitness. On food part, we want to provide pure satvik food option to our patrons and also add custom designed meals based on the health of an individual.”
Heath Zingo has had an incredible journey so far. What started as a place for healthy snacks, soon became a spot for healthy meals. Their food has received a “thumbs up” by the group that is not so easy to please – kids. “We have seen kids loving our food, which we initially thought will be difficult as in general kids these days prefer junk.” That sure does count as a feather on their cap.
One cannot say goodbye to this interesting venture without asking them for advice – “Restaurant business is operationally extremely intensive. It requires micro-management and day to day focus on running the operations. It is a combination of manufacturing and services sector which makes it more difficult. Irrespective of the process/systems that you set-up, you need to have a daily focus on operations. Probably having a chef as a partner/owner is a plus.”
